We study how animal viruses cross species barriers and emerge as new pathogens in humans, with a focus on influenza A virus and SARS-CoV-2.

By understanding how and when cross-species transmission occurs, and what factors allow a virus to become stably established in a new host, we aim to better mitigate the impact of future pandemics caused by zoonotic diseases.

What we do

Understanding cross-species virus transmission

The spillover of animal viruses into new hosts drives the emergence of new human pathogens. We investigate the mechanisms and drivers behind these events.

Cross-Species Transmission

Investigating how and when animal viruses such as influenza A virus spill over into new hosts, including humans.

Host Adaptation

Identifying the viral and host factors that allow a virus to replicate and transmit stably within a new host species.

Pandemic Preparedness

Translating insight on zoonotic viruses into strategies that mitigate the impact of future pandemics.

Respiratory Specimen Virus Analysis

Screening and characterizing viruses in human and animal respiratory specimens to monitor circulating and emerging respiratory pathogens.

Virome-Based Novel Virus Detection

Applying virome sequencing to uncover previously unknown viruses circulating in animal and human populations.

Viral Vaccine Research

Developing and evaluating vaccine strategies against zoonotic and pandemic-prone viruses such as influenza A virus.
